The Porter Report 2026 SMS May/June Recap
Happy hump day, everyone. Month 1 of the summer movie season is officially in the books. Despite being condensed, there was no shortage of action at the cineplex. We are just getting started with the summer movie madness, but before we transition into what's next, let's put a bow on May and June in our first Monthly recap of the season.
It's been quite the journey getting Star Wars back on the big screen. But after 7 years, the drought ended thanks to the clan of 2. A fast-paced adventure that brought all of the heart and soul that makes these characters so beloved, Din and Grogu ushered in a new era of cinematic storytelling for a galaxy far, far away. Though it is unclear where the next story will take us, Star Wars is back where it belongs, and we are all the better for it.

Comedy has been in a strange limbo for a good while now. The social climate is making it difficult to push boundaries for fear of potentially offending and upsetting subsets of groups. While so many comedians have gotten the memo, the Waynes Bros might have lost theirs in the mail. Scary Movie 6 puts the parody franchise back in the hands of its original architects in an installment that sees the return of fan-favorite characters and plenty of jokes that don't shy away from controversy. A triumphant return for some true legends of comedy in a movie that is much more needed than anyone knows.

For 80s and 90s kids, there was nothing like waking up on Saturday morning, grabbing some cereal and sitting down to watch your favorite cartoon. Some of those same kids have grown up to now deliver that same sense of joy to a new generation. I'm just not sure this is the version they had in mind. Masters of the Universe had all of the makings of a promising reintroduction of the series via a new live-action film. Unfortunately, the result didn't have the power we all hoped. Filled with solid action but devoid of any sense of investment in the characters or world, Masters of the Universe is powerless on arrival in one of the year's biggest disappointments.

Few people would know what to do if their world changed forever. We play out the scenarios in our heads, but in reality, we never truly know how we would react until it occurs. Will our mindset change? Will we be scared or enlightened? Would we question our beliefs? Steven Spielberg attempts to answer these questions in one of the most thought-provoking yet thoroughly engaging movies of 2026. Suspenseful, emotional, and thrilling, Disclosure Day asks the question of not what we would do, but rather if we will truly be ready when the moment comes.

Playtime ain't what it used to be. While the kids of yesterday played with dolls and action figures, today's tykes crash out over the lack of a wi-fi signal. What happens when technology takes precedence and alters what we believe playtime should look like? Toy Story 5 continues the franchise with its most socially relevant entry yet as Jessie, Buzz, Woody and the gang battle modern technology in a fight to save the age of toys. Sporting that signature heart and humor with some real-life thematic messaging about staying true to who you are even in changing times. For a franchise that has endured for 30 years, it is wonderful to know that playing with old friends will never get old.

Trauma and grief go hand in hand. They can be shackles that prevent you from moving past a stage of your life that brought you pain and suffering. But there are times when the call to do what's right gives you just the boost you need to break free. The DCU is still very much in its early stages, but a member of the superfamily is here once more to take us to a section of the universe yet to be explored. Supergirl is a fast-moving thrill ride whose pacing is both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness. But where it shines is the characters who are far from perfect, but that is the very thing that makes them relatable. As this universe continues to grow and evolve, having the heroes and villains be multilayered to that degree will turn this heroverse into one where everyone can truly see themselves in every aspect and every form.
